Presentation Day

What went right in the presentations?

There were many things that went awesome. The flyer from my presentation was s great tool to promote our blog. It had a QR code and a shortened url to encourage people to visit the blog. With these things a person does not have to remember what a site is called they can just look at the flyer or, pull it up on their phone. I thought the addiction blog was the most heartfelt. The introduction draws a person in to read more about it. The second chance blog was full of valuable resources for a convicted felon all in one place. I never looked at Lowes as being socially responsible, but now I know I can recycle many things there.

What went wrong?

There were some things that could always be improved. I thought our blog could have had more quotes or articles to give it the extra boost. There was more focus on how we technically did than our message being heard. I thought the presentation was good, but more practice could have helped. I would have added a discussion forum to learn how others go green.

Compare and Improve!

I thought overall our blog was awesome. It had a background that supported our message. There were some blogs that lacked design, and were left white. A pop of color would have helped. There was one other flyer besides ours, but it was not very inventive. I would have loved to see more ephemera from everyone. Overall, I thought it incorporated everything we learned. I think creating multiple things would help us learn. For example, have everyone do a Photosynth of their own, or create a Facebook account for cross promotion. I would have liked more guidance on how to present it. It seems like we were all over on what to talk about.

Job Fair Observations

What technology is being used today?
Today, there was a career fair at Herzing University in Akron. There were many different types of businesses that came to the event. I wanted to see how innovative the companies were when presenting themselves. Many companies that were volunteer driven had nothing, but a pencil and a clipboard. These items were used to collect information. This is a good way for a business to have records of people they met, and may want to hire.
Another, employer had a QR code that you code scan and it would take you directly to their website. I did it on my smart phone and was taken to the website instantly. This is awesome technology because I don't need a card and anything with the companies name on it to remember.
The final new thing I did not even know was a video resume! One employer had a tablet to show you how it was done. This is a great way to jump off the page and be different from other people or businesses.

What should have been used?
I did notice that some places did not have a website to visit. In today's world a business won't survive without one. I think more QR codes are a great idea! People should have them everywhere; on business cards, flyers, even shirts. That way even when someone is not at their table a person can still find their website. It is great advertising. People also could have had tablets to show their company in a unique way.

Practice photosynth

Today in class we learned how to do photosynth. The first thing is to pick a spot and have a camera on a tripod or stable surface. Then take at least 20 overlapping pictures to compose a virtual view. I did a spot by the dumpster in the back of school.

Going Green!

The topic that my partners and I are putting forth is teaching people how to go green. This is an important because we are running out of room for all the waste everyone produces. The Earth has many resources that are deminishing, and we need to find alternatives and solutions. It is time to be socially responsible to our envirnonment. We will talk about the three R's, reduce, reuse, and recycle. We want an informational blog, as well as one for sharing ideas on how people are individually green.

"Privacy - to be or not to be....that be the question!"

One challenge to an individual's privacy on the internet is that the information passes through so many different computer systems. Each of those systems can monitor, capture, and store that information. Many systems can know your browser history and what specifically you looked at on those sites.
Another, problem is that websites can learn identities of their visitors involuntarily. They use cookies, or small text files deposited on a computer hard drive when a user visits Web sites. The site uses its information to customize to your preferences.
A third way, is through spyware. It is a program that secretly installs itself on an internet user's computer by piggybacking on a larger application. It then calls out for ad banners and records your movements on the web.
One way a company can safeguard itself is by using technical solutions. New technologies are always being developed and used to protect privacy during web interactions. Many of these use encrypting tools to make e-mail and surfing activities anonymous. They also prevent computers form accepting cookies, and can detect spyware.

Module 7 Maps

The places I choose are Paris, France, Daytona Beach, Florida, and Capetown, South Africa. Paris is a city I lived and went to school in 2005. I would go back in an instant. Daytona is where my family vacations every year since I was old enough to remember. A1A is also the most beautiful coastal byway in Florida. Capetown has also been a dream of mine to visit.
Businesses can use maps as a great tool. Someone can easily find their business. Co-workers can send directions to each other. A travel agency can show a customer where they will stay.
