Practice photosynth

Today in class we learned how to do photosynth. The first thing is to pick a spot and have a camera on a tripod or stable surface. Then take at least 20 overlapping pictures to compose a virtual view. I did a spot by the dumpster in the back of school.

Going Green!

The topic that my partners and I are putting forth is teaching people how to go green. This is an important because we are running out of room for all the waste everyone produces. The Earth has many resources that are deminishing, and we need to find alternatives and solutions. It is time to be socially responsible to our envirnonment. We will talk about the three R's, reduce, reuse, and recycle. We want an informational blog, as well as one for sharing ideas on how people are individually green.

"Privacy - to be or not to be....that be the question!"

One challenge to an individual's privacy on the internet is that the information passes through so many different computer systems. Each of those systems can monitor, capture, and store that information. Many systems can know your browser history and what specifically you looked at on those sites.
Another, problem is that websites can learn identities of their visitors involuntarily. They use cookies, or small text files deposited on a computer hard drive when a user visits Web sites. The site uses its information to customize to your preferences.
A third way, is through spyware. It is a program that secretly installs itself on an internet user's computer by piggybacking on a larger application. It then calls out for ad banners and records your movements on the web.
One way a company can safeguard itself is by using technical solutions. New technologies are always being developed and used to protect privacy during web interactions. Many of these use encrypting tools to make e-mail and surfing activities anonymous. They also prevent computers form accepting cookies, and can detect spyware.

Module 7 Maps

The places I choose are Paris, France, Daytona Beach, Florida, and Capetown, South Africa. Paris is a city I lived and went to school in 2005. I would go back in an instant. Daytona is where my family vacations every year since I was old enough to remember. A1A is also the most beautiful coastal byway in Florida. Capetown has also been a dream of mine to visit.
Businesses can use maps as a great tool. Someone can easily find their business. Co-workers can send directions to each other. A travel agency can show a customer where they will stay.

A good of example of why photo sharing is a great business tool is using them to share pictures with clients. A real estate company could use it to show all current properties for sale. A plastic surgeon could show before and after pictures. The possibilities are endless.

Chapter 10 Response

Keeping up with the times is essential for businesses in today's world; one way to do that is through e-commerce. It not only affects a business’s bottom line by commercial transactions, but also through marketing. There are many ways to get to millions of people for free through social media. Having a Facebook page for your business is an example. Crowdsourcing utilizing the "wisdom of crowds" helps companies learn from customers in order to improve product offerings and increase customer value. An example of this is when Netflix offered a contest in which it offered to pay $1 million to the person or team who comes up with a method for improving by 10 percent Netflix's prediction of what movies customers would like as measured against their actual choices. This was a great idea because it promoted the brand and the company. Behavioral targeting tracks the click-streams of individuals for the purpose of advertising to their specific wants and likes. This increases the effectiveness of banner, rich media, and video ads.

Flamingo Lingo

Let's talk about flamingos! The word "flamingo" comes from the Spanish and Latin word "flamenco" which means fire, and refers to the bright color of the birds' feathers. Flamingos are strong but rare swimmers and powerful fliers, even though they're most often seen just wading. I like them because they have flexible legs. Look for more on flamingo updates in the future.

Chapter 6 Response

Traditional file management techniques make it difficult for organizations to keep track of all of the pieces of data they use in a systematic way and to organize these data so that they can be easily accessed. Different functional areas and groups were allowed to develop their own files independently. Over time, this traditional file management environment creates problems such as data redundancy and inconsistency, program-data dependence, inflexibility, poor security, and lack of data sharing and availability. A database management system solves these problems with software that permits centralization of data and data management so that businesses have a single consistent source for all their data needs. Using a DBMS minimizes redundant and inconsistent files.

Name my break dancing flamingo

I was in the Bahamas in January and I wanted to see the local wildlife. It was a typical jeep cruise until I cam upon some flamingos. The radio in the jeep was on, and did not think anything of it until one of the flamingo's started bobbing along to Jam on It by Newclues. The next thing I new the flamingo was break dancing! I took this picture of my now adopted Flamingo! The only problem is he has no name. That's where you come in! Please reply with names for my break dancing star!

“The Non-verbal Work Environment”

Today in class, we talked about verbal and non-verbal communication. We learned that the world is more non-verbal than verbal. Body language and facial expressions are often used to express things.  Some companies do not even allow employees to speak. Knowing how to communicate even non-verbally is essential in business.

To prove how difficult communication can be we played the non-verbal game in class. Teams were divided into threes. Everyone had a different title and job. Every team was given Lego pieces to assemble. The CEO could only answer yes or no questions and had the directions for what the team was building. The CEO also had to stay in the hall away from the others. The worker was actually building the item, but could not speak and only follow directions on how to build from the foreman. The foreman was the go between from the CEO to the worker. He or she could ask the CEO any yes or no question and had to direct the worker on how to build.

I was the foreman and it proved to be a difficult task. I think the foreman would equal an executive or manager in the business world. I was basically, the middle layer of a company ladder. I had to figure out what it was and how to instruct someone to build it. I think my job is for someone who can stay cool and problem solve. Someone who takes what is given and figures out how to work with it. Not being able to have a conversation with either person was stressful. I learned that I need to be able to communicate in many ways to be successful in business.

What’s the Big Deal About RSS?

What is an R.S.S. feed? It stands for really simple syndication. It is a way to easily distribute a list of headlines, update notices, and sometimes content to a wide number of people. It is used by computer programs that organize those headlines and notices for easy reading. It could be entertainment, newsletters, announcements, advertisements, or chronicles. Basically, anything that puts out information to draw someone into the website or business.

Big businesses use RSS feeds for many reasons. Keeping customers and potential customers informed about their company, products, services and promotions. Another is updating suppliers with company policies, and procedures. Keeps employees and associates up to date on what's going on in the company. An example of this is a new account. The channel features allow people to pick the language, so that business can be done on a global scale. It is also an effective communication tool. Instead of an email, which in today's world has people concerned about scams, anyone can look at the information with no risk. This also cuts down on time a person spends sifting through their inbox.

Small businesses can use the RSS feeds to gain more customers. They could send out information about a sale or new product. If they had exciting new about their business it could be posted. Customers can stay easily informed and are not bothered with one email after another. Advertising will help a small business flourish with new customers, so RSS feeds might be essential for continued survival.

What is digital firm?

The basic definition of digital firm media is one in which nearly all of the organization’s significant business relationships with customers, suppliers, and employees are digitally enabled and mediated. This is used in business processes, or a set of logically related tasks and behaviors that organizations develop over time to produce specific results a unique manner in which these activities are organized and coordinated.  How a business does things is important to keep track of and know as it offers a competitive edge. Key corporate assets like intellectual properties are all managed through digital means.
One of the strengths of a digital firm is twenty-four hour access to the information to make key decisions regarding that business. The information can be accessed anywhere. For instance, someone could be in China instead of the main office in Delaware and still be able to make the calls because of the easy access to the data.
Time shifting and space shifting are two parts of digital firm used by companies to do business on a global scale. Time shifting means someone can do business at any time; he or she is not limited to a normal 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Space shifting is that business is done nationally and internationally there are no boundaries. Work can be accomplished wherever it is most productive.
Many companies are using the internet in every part of their business. The companies that are not fully digitized are moving that way over time. Email has replaced regular mail, and it is easy to communicate through things like Lync. Lync is a way to correspond to coworkers through instant messaging. Instead of being face-to-face people can also have meetings virtually with web cams.
An essential component of the digital firm is its interdependence on information systems. It’s like the married with children line “you can’t have one without the other.”  Digital firms depend on technology and have a need for constant growth. A company’s five year strategic plan partly has to be based on what technology, or systems can do.
An information system is a key factor in operating a business. The more efficiently information is accessed the more profit can be found. A good example of this is Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart has a retail link system so that when one product is sold to a customer, the supplier knows and can ship out the replacement. Information systems also improve customer relations, decision making skills, offer a competitive advantage.
Whether or not a business survives today means how quickly it can adapt to ever changing technology. For example, a bank with no ATM would most likely not be open today. A company has to move with the times and be up to date. Most every business transaction today is done electronically and it is a necessity of doing business.
